Guitar Jojo

Born: 1978

Hometown: Austin, TX

Current town: Plano, TX

Info: Jojo seems to have been born with a guitar in hand and the music already in his soul. He has been playing for 22 years and has learned much from masters who came before him like SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, etc. Jojo has also been a part of a number of local bands and has years of experience as a bar manager which is an entertainment rich enviornment. This experience has also allowed him to become somewhat of a social philosopher, broadening his view of the world around him.

Jojo has spent the past few years studying the music and entertainment industry and brings a very realistic view to the table for discussion. With a collection of songs close to the 30,000 marker he is also well versed in the many forms music takes. Hold on to your seat because Jojo will give it to you straight and hold no punches.

Having a dream and losing it along the way

Remember when we were growing up? We all had dreams of what we wanted to be. Maybe you wanted to be a cop, a fireman, in some cases a ballerina. When you actually are old enough to start to like a piece of music and understand why you like it, you may try to emulate that artist or style of music. In a lot of cases, you may want to pick up a guitar and learn to play because you wanted to be just like your favorite artist. You practice and practice and along the line you will come to a crossroads.. One direction leads you down the path of originality and the will to not only write your own material, but to find like minded individuals and form a band with the dream to play for others and get signed, become rich and famous or even local fame. The other direction leads you no where, you know how to play but that guitar of yours sits in the corner, now more as a decorational piece than anything else. You still may enjoy the music, but the funny thing is that I guess more as adults than anything, you lost the dream along the way. What happened? Life happened. I have been there but the dream for me is still alive. It is not something that just ceases to be. You just need to remember why you started playing in the first place. Music is the true language of the soul. Now I am not going to get all sanctimonious on the "music can save the world" and all but, it sure would be great if it could. Realistically, people in general are too damned stubborn to shut up and actually listen to someone's point of view and put their own views aside to come to some common ground. So you're in a band and your band gets signed to a label. Now somewhere along the way it is no longer about the love of playing it is now about how much you can get paid for playing. Yes, we know that money is the ultimate corruption of the world, but without it you're pretty much out of luck. Do you still love the music as much as you did? Do you truly appreciate the fans? Of course without the fans you wouldn't be making the money that you are making but do you really care? I don't think that the modern band can appreciate the music and the fans as they did when they were first learning to play and had the dream that put them on the path to play. I find that today's music lacks anything new. Korn came out, then Linkin Park, then Kid Rock so on and on and on. It is for lack of a better term, "Cookie Cutter" Anytime anything original is produced, there inevitably will appear a handful of artists that sound the same. Sure something you hear may be great, but do your own thing. Don't be a cow that mindlessly follows the heard. Remember the dream. Remember why you play. Love what you do and do what you love and above all else, don't let anyone tell you that you can't because only you can make that decision. Stop making excuses, dust off that guitar in the corner and follow the dream. On that note, I will leave you to contemplate these words. Till Next time.
